Annual reflection - 2022

In this article, I review 2022 and share my goals for 2023.

2022 review

My four goals for 2022 were to:

  • Reprioritize my daily personal health habits,

  • Spend more quality time with Sable and Oliver,

  • Support the growth of LegUp Health, and

  • Help scale Windfall the right way.

On the personal front, my goal was to reprioritize my daily personal health habits. I’m happy to report this was a success. I’m back on a decent sleep and workout schedule. I’m also doing a decent job maintaining my weight by tracking my calorie intake.

On the family front, I wanted to spend more quality time with Sable and Oliver. My goal was to have a date with Sable most weeks and start taking Oliver with me on weekend errands and walks. In hindsight, this was a silly goal. Oliver is still under the age of two, and Sable and I both work demanding jobs. We made progress here, but I need to temper my expectations while we are growing our family.

Professionally, I wanted to support the growth of LegUp Health while helping Windfall scale the right way. At LegUp Health, we successfully designed a partnership plan to enable JD to go full-time and we doubled the client base to ~100 Utah households. At Windfall, I did a nice job of striking a balance between prioritizing people and performance while being a team player and delivering on my responsibilities.

2023 goals

My four goals for 2023 are to:

  • Get my weight below 200 lbs

  • Write a newsletter most Sundays

  • Support the growth of LegUp Health

  • Become a domain expert at Windfall

First, I want to get my weight below 200 lbs. I’m not getting any younger (or lighter). The time is now!

Second, I want to write a newsletter most Sundays. This equates to 27 newsletters in 2023. I want to make regular writing as simple (and easy) as possible while still making progress. My general focus will be on best practices for effective leadership (and whatever else interests me). If a handbook comes out of this, great. If not, no worries. I’m not going to try to force it.

Third, I want to support the growth of LegUp Health. I’ll consider this successful if we double the client base again (~200 clients) and build the first version of LegUp Benefits. This will require me to learn how to build a SaaS application via contractors and self-taught coding.

Fourth, I want to become a domain expert at Windfall. This will require further macro knowledge in the digital advertising, data, and machine learning spaces. I’ll also need to develop expertise in the specific competitive and cooperative ecosystems Windfall plays in.

Areas for improvement in my leadership

As I reflect on my leadership, I think there are two ways I can improve. First, I continue to lose patience with low performers, which is unproductive. And second, I sometimes strive for perfection at the expense of leverage. These are two areas I will work to improve in 2023.
